The discoid buoy with a diameter of 12 m and a draught of 1.6 m is
fitted with solar panels and a dieselgenerator.
Senors for physical, chemical and biological water parameters as well as
meteorological sensors are installed.
The buoy had been used in earlier times for research on the behaviour of carrier systems to waves and currents. During the MERMAID project the buoy had been equipped with energy supply and telemetry. The buoy was one of the measuring stations in the CANVAS project.
The buoy is located in the salinity gradient of the Elbe
in front of the Kiel canal near Brunsbüttel.
It is now used as an experimental
platform for research.
